Plum and Walnut Chutney

Zest and juice of 1 orange
1 kilo plums, peeled and chopped
1 granny smith apple, peeled and chopped
1 onion, peeled and chopped
1 cup (250ml) apple cider vinegar
3/4 cup thick apple puree (from red apples)
1 tsp sea salt
1 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp mustard powder
1 tsp allspice
1 tsp ginger
¼ tsp cayenne pepper
60g roasted walnuts, chopped

Pour orange juice and zest over the green apple. Set aside.

Bring cider vinegar, onions, apple puree and plums in large heavy based saucepan. Bring to the boil, reduce heat and simmer for about 30 minutes. Add apple mixture, sugar, salt and spices. Stir an additional 20-30 minutes until the mixture has thickened. Add the walnuts and leave to cool slightly. Store in sterilised jars. (I just poured boiling water over my jars because I knew it wouldn’t last too long.)

  1. Hi there – I was going to make this recipe, but realized that although you mention sugar in the directions, there’s no sugar listed in the ingredients. How much sugar does this recipe require? Thanks!

Please let me know what you think
